Dear Families
Farewell to Spring and a warm welcome to Summer!
The sunny start to the week has been lovely and it is terrific to be able to have a bust school with different events being a distraction from the closures and interruption so the past two years. We have classes rehearsing for the both the Nativity and Christmas Carols so the energy levels are on a high across the school. Fingers crossed our children can maintain this excitement and have a strong finish to the year. December is always busy in schools and homes so we encourage everyone.... including the adults ..... to value self-care behaviours like good sleep habits and keeping hydrated.
Next week we have a few external activities so it is important for families to have their PAM accounts active and permissions granted for their children. The WHAT'S ON article provides a list of events coming up as well as which onsite events visitors can attend. Confirmation was our first event with visitors so we had to have Check-In procedures in place - can we thank everyone who attended for the way they responded to our sensible and gentle approach to enacting these expectations. Graduation will follow the same procedure but with a larger crowd so again we ask your support, so please be aware of the check-in procedures. A few days later we will have the Nativity & Carols events which will require us to manage much larger crowds so we will certainly be reliant on the support of school families to ensure these events can be managed effectively.
Next week we have both our 2022 Transition Day (Tues) as well as the Semester Two Reports being distributed (Fri). Our 2022 Foundation Class will be onsite 8.35am to 12.00pm while the rest of the school will spend the middle part of the day with their 2022 teacher and classmates. We hope to have Mrs.Darby onsite for part of the day. 2022 Start of the Year Dates are published in this newsletter.
So with Christmas Trees up to announce the start of Advent may I wish you and your family a most blessed start to the Christmas Season. With only two weeks left of my principal-ship at Churchill I plan on enjoying my last days here as I sadly go about my farewells. I look forward to seeing parents and families at our end of year mass and other events where I can offer my sincere thanks to everyone at Lumen Christi for the past nine years.
Have a great week, Dave
During Advent and Christmas time, the St Vincent de Paul Society of Victoria encourages us to give to those in need.
Christmas holds a very special place in our hearts, as we prepare for one of our busiest but most rewarding times of the year. Sadly, we find that some local families feel the pinch even more.
As part of our Catholic Social Teaching, we want to give to others in need as Jesus taught us. We need to reflect during Advent and remember that for us, it is a time for giving, reflecting and being with those we love.
We are asking that on Friday, Dec 3rd, the children bring a gold coin donation to school then each class will purchase a gift for a local child in need this Christmas.
BIRTHDAYS - An 'Along the Track' Reflection by Jim Quillinan
Jim's offering this month is titled 'Birthdays'. This semester all of our classes learnt a little about the Psalms - A special collection of ancients writings that have poem or song like characteristics. Jim quotes the Psalms when we writes about our birthdays being a reminder that we are "wonderfully made" (Psalm 139). Our birthdays remind us to celebrate all that is wonderful in our life, just being alive, love and friendships, achievements, our goals and dreams.
What not find some quiet time this week to enjoy reading BIRTHDAYS.
Please take note of these dates for your family calendar

Turbo Transition Program - Foundation 2022
At long last we are now able to welcome our Foundation Class of 2022 onsite for their transition activities. These are open to children who are enrolled as well as those families who are interested in finding out some more about Lumen Christi. We would like to thank the staff for their efforts to offer a turbo-boost Transition with twice weekly sessions for the new recruits. If you have any questions please contact the school.
Congratulations to the senior students who produced a wonderful Bethlehem Bazaar last week. It was a joyous way to celebrate the start of Advent but also a very successful fundraiser for our Social Justice projects. Thank you to the school community for the fabulous support. A great day was had by all.
We ask families to take note of the following dates for the 2022 School Year. The Victorian Governemtn gazetted start date is a little unusual so please carefully add these dates to your diaries.
Friday 28th January - Start date for staff (School Office open from approx. 11.30am)
Monday 31st January - Testing Day 1
Tuesday 1st February - Testing Day 2
Wednesday 2nd February - ALL students commence (including Foundation students*)
*Foundation students will start their Wednesday 'Rest Days' from 9th Feb until they start full-time from Tuesday 15th March.
As you would be aware, our activities schedule for this school year has been heavily impacted by the restrictions that have been imposed on schools. Alongside this we have also had to deal with various school providers and camps withdrawing their services due to compliance issues. Our Year 3/4 and 5/6 Camps have been cancelled as have various excursions and incursions that would have normally taken place across the year have also been reduced. Due to this we have made the decision to rebate any associated payments from events back onto family's fee statements. This is a rather complicated task but should be easily identifiable on your fees statements. We will reach out to families who will be graduating from our school who may now be in credit due to be a full-fee paying family who pays via direct debit.
On the school website you will find a listing of Fees Information including downloadable forms including:
- 2022 Fees Schedule
- Direct Debit forms
- CSEF Application Form for Concession Card Holders
- Smith Family Application Form for Concession Card Holders
Announcement of Lavalla's New Principal
Lumen Christi has an excellent working relationship Lavalla Catholic College. During this year it was announced that the current Principal Mr.John Freeman would be transferring to Mary MacKillop Secondary in Leongatha in 2022. Last week Marist Schools Australia released the attached statement appointing Mr.Ryan Greer as the new Principal for Lavalla. We take this opportunity to both acknowledge the outstanding work John has done as Principal, especially in his work in strengthening the relationship between our two schools, as well as congratulate Ryan.
