Dear Families,
Welcome to Week 5! We are officially half way into another term and as always there is a lot going on and a lot to celebrate here at Lumen Christi.
Firstly, thank you to our families who were able to support the Book Fair last week. It was lovely to see so many children walking away with books that they were going to read and enjoy.
We also had a great turn out for our “Dad’s (and special persons’) night – a huge thank you to Mr Clarke for organising another action packed night and to Miss Smith and Miss Jess for helping out.
This week, we have Meerkat Productions coming to share a play about one of the shortlisted books for Book Week. I know the children have been preparing for this in their Library session so that they can take part in the production too.
Speaking of Book Week, Monday 21 st of August is Dress Up Day – so please start thinking about a costume. Remember, it doesn’t have to be shop bought or anything fancy. Usually, you can be creative with something you might have at home already. The last thing anybody at Lumen Christi wants is for families to spend a fortune on costumes. It’s always a fun day, we encourage all children to participate by dressing up as their favourite book character.
This week, we are celebrating Grandparent’s Day. We invite our Grandparents and other special people to come along for one of our amazing breakfasts at 8:10am in the eco-centre and then for mass at 9:30am in the church.
Today is the solemnity of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Mary MacKillop was famous for saying, “Never see a need without doing something about it”. There is a need in our local community to support those who don’t have enough and so we ask our families this week to “Give a Damn, Give a Can” so that we can provide meals to those in need. There are tubs in classrooms and one in the foyer area at school. Some children have started bringing in their cans of food already, which is wonderful to see. Please give generously if you can.
Go Diamonds! Our netballers won the netball World Cup also this week. And also – Go Matildas! I don’t think God would mind if we all said a special prayer ensuring Samantha Kerr’s calf injury will be right for the quarter finals.
Have a wonderful week ahead,
Sally

New Parenting Program Available
Parentzone Gippsland is providing a new 5 week online program commencing this term called "Let's talk about Parenting". It is designed to strengthen communication between parents and children and to help parents understand their child's behaviour and what may be causing those behaviours. It is a completely free program.
Hello,
My name is Emily and I am again contacting you in my role as Moe Earth Market Coordinator.
The Latrobe Valley Beekeepers Association is pleased to announce we will be hosting our second Moe Earth Market on August 13th. We are a local Registered Charity with a group of dedicated volunteers who have been revitalising our club facility on Saviages Road, Moe.
The site is home to our new Community Pollinator Garden plus several other community groups. We are passionate about developing a space for positive community connection.
Moe Earth Market will take place on Sunday 13th August 2023 from 9am to 2pm.
Follow-up events will be held quarterly (second Sunday of August, November, & February). This is an outdoor “grow it, make it, bake it, sew it, recycle it” market, which will also have food trucks and include FREE children’s activities.
I am aware that your school newsletter would reach many local families and friends, so I am writing to you today to request if it would be at all possible to print/include a copy of our market poster in your upcoming school newsletter. I have attached this for you to use
I hope that you are able to assist our community and promote this 100% local event!
Thankyou for your support.
Warm Regards,
Emily
Responsible Social Media Activity
At Lumen Christi, whilst we strongly recommend that age restrictions are adhered to, we respect the decisions that our parents make about allowing the use of Social Media in their homes.
From time to time with social media, issues arise in the home that filter into school in regards to the online behaviour of some children.
I strongly recommend that parents and children understand both their rights and responsibilities when it comes to online behaviour and both the benefits and risks of the use of social media for young children and pre-teens. In particular, both parents and children need to understand what consitutes online bullying and any behaviour that could have legal ramifications.
Below is a link from "Raising Children" that outlines some information in regards to social media for kids. It is worth having a look and having a discussion with our kids about some of the content and most importantly respectful behaviour online. Social Media is an increasingly important part of how we communicate and connect with people, but using it in an inappropriate way can have a negative effect on others and this is not okay.
