Dear Families,
Well, it was an eventful day on Monday at Lumen Christi. Thank you to all of our families for being patient and understanding in supporting us in keeping children safe. We appreciate those who were able to arrange to collect their children from school, making it easier to keep those who were unable to go home in a calmer environment.
We had a gas leak at the school, which was relatively quickly contained by the emergency services attending the site, but it was not appropriate to send children back into classrooms due to the smell of gas. I want to thank our staff, in particular our leaders Kristie Smith and Elly Smith for responding calmly and all teachers, teaching assistants and administration staff for ensuring that the children
were kept well away from anything dangerous. I am incredibly proud that our staff were able to respond, following our school processes that have been practised throughout the year.
Our children were all very cooperative also and were able to follow our processes calmly because they have been educated in how to do this. One of the things that we do daily across all classes is we line up in roll order so that in an event of an emergency, it is easy to mark off the children and account for each person.
It is always difficult when these things happen in schools, but unfortunately these things happen and we need to be ready, which I can confidently say that we were.
If your child is feeling unsettled by events that happened at school on Monday, please let myself or the classroom teacher know so that we can help. The messaging that the children will here from me and our teachers is that we are safe at school because we know what to do in an emergency.
We have Grandparents’ Day and Mass this Thursday starting at 8:40 in classrooms, then with mass in the Eco-Centre at 9:30 and Morning tea to follow.
Pope Francis has this to say about Grandparents:
“How important grandparents are for family life, for passing on the human and religious heritage which is so essential for each and every society! How important it is to have intergenerational exchanges and dialogue, especially within the context of the family. Children and the elderly build the future of peoples: children because they lead history forward, the elderly because they transmit the experience and wisdom of their lives. This relationship and this dialogue between generations is
a treasure to be preserved and strengthened.”
Have a wonderful week ahead,
Sally

A reminder about student attendance. Parents have a legal responsibility to ensure their child attends school regularly. At Lumen Christi, the optimal attendance rate is 90% or higher. We love to see our children at school and learning with their friends.
When attendance falls below 90% (not due to illness) with no explanation, we are required to follow up with families as per our DOSCEL policies and procedures. In some cases, we may have to report absences to DOSCEL to ensure that we are meeting our legal obligations as a school.
If your family or your child needs support in ensuring regular attendance at school, we are here to help. Please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher or Mrs Darby so that we can ensure all of our children are at school, learning and socialising with their peers.
