As a school we fall into a system of schools networked under the name Diocese of Sale:Catholic Education Limited (DOSCEL). DOSCEL are our governing body but more importantly are a source of support and structure. In the current global scenario of health pandemics, they have provided clear and current information to the school. In this newsletter there is information supplied through DOSCEL and we share this information with you to provide guidelines as well as reassurance that the Catholic school system is monitoring this situation with every consideration made to prioritise the wellbeing of our students and employees. Any updates will be communicated with families with the new online platform of the website and App being the vehicle where critical updates can be relayed to you quickly, the scenario being similar to closure days in the past for events like bushfires. So again we urge parents to have the App downloaded on your devices and to be in the habit of checking your emails for school notifications.
As this newsletter will be published before the conclusion of our Athletics day I trust we all had a great day and the predicted rain didn't make its appearance until the afternoon. We look forward to seeing plenty of families and friends cheering us on at the Yinnar & District Athletics Day next Thursday - Can parents please complete the permission notice linked to this newsletter as soon as possible. Alternatively, permission notes can be located on the 'Forms & Documents' box on the website.
Enjoy your weekend.

First Communion Night: Saturday March 21st 6pm
We are looking forward to celebrate this key milestone for our Year 4 First Communion candidates. The Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Limited (DOSCEL), is continuing to monitor the impact of COVID-19 (Coronavirus).
The situation is changing rapidly and our immediate focus is to minimise the spread of this, and other viruses, in our school and community.
The best defence against most viruses is practising good hand and respiratory (cough/sneeze) hygiene.
Please ensure that the following key messages are reinforced with your children:
- wash hands frequently with soap and water, before and after eating, and after going to the toilet
- avoid touching your face (eyes, nose and mouth)
- cover their cough and sneeze (preferably into the crook of their elbow) and dispose of any used tissues appropriately
- avoid contact with others (more than 1.5 metres from people) if they, or another person, is unwell.
Students should not attend school if they are feeling unwell and should remain at home until symptoms resolve. Appropriate medical assistance should be sought as required.
If your child becomes unwell at school, you will be contacted and requested to take your child home.
Further information is available from the following:
- The Department of Health and Human Service https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/victorian-public-coronavirus-disease-covid-19
We would like to reinforce a couple of key points:
- If using the carpark please park you car in a designated spot to drop your child off, please do not stop in the driveway causing traffic to bank up.
- Students are not permitted to walk down into the carpark unattended. If parents choose to use the carpark they are requested to walk up to collect their children.
- Pedestrians are to enter/exit the school via the gates not the carpark gate.
- We recommend parking on the school side of Williams Avenue so that children can use the car door on the kerb side, eliminating the need to step onto the road.
- We thank parents for their continued support to keep the bus zone clear.
These rules are in place to maintain the safety of all our children, as well as extend common courtesy to other road users.
Cambo's Kitchen: School Breakfast Program will operate on Thursdays from 8.10am
School Uniform: Mrs.Campbell will work with families to ensure that they can meet our uniform guidelines. If you require assistance please let her know.
Playgroup: We have been thrilled with the repsonse to our playgroup, welcoming both existing school families and new families to the Lumen Christi community. A real strength of our playgroup are our volunteer helpers, Barb and Brenda, who contribute so much of their own time and energy. We would warmly welcome any other families interested in participating in our school playgroup. Please let us know if you have babies to pre-schoolers so we can include you.
Languages Program: Italian Focus Phrase
In class the students learn the phrase and its accompanying actions/signs. The actions serve the purpose to carry meaning for the word or sometimes mirror the motions made by our mouths or tongue.
For further information feel free to call pass and chat to Signora Colaciello.
As part of our wellbeing programs we were supported by Churchill Vinnies to be able to invite to Lumen Christi the Meerkat Productions team who presented their bullying show titled 'The Bull Ring'. The plot of the show involved the main characters dealing various relationship issues and seeking advice from others in the animal kingdom.
The classes have completed some follow up work and discussions in class. We thank the Year 5/6 students for their input and we would like to share Nino's reflection on what strategies the different animals suggested you could do when faced with a relationship problem or bullying.
Polar bear- To have a buddy to stick next to you and help you when times go down.
Crocodile - To not make snap decisions and think about what will happen if you do.
Giraffe- To not be afraid and stand tall, above them and ignore what they say.
Lion-To stick next to your friends and support each other.
Elephant-To not listen to what they said, ignore them and do what you you think is right.
Orang-utang-To remember to try all of the strategies and not only just one.
Bison - To not give up, and to not listen to anyone who is mean or criticising you.
This fits in easily with our Lenten message of 'Be the I in KIND' which the children have been discussing with our Religous Education Leader (and Art teacher) Mrs.Colaciello.
As part of our Health & PE Curriculum, and our Healthy Together Initiative, we recently had the team of the Melbourne Wholesale Fruit Market present their MarketFresh show to all our classes.
The program is designed to achieve a number of objectives;
- Expose children to new varieties and types of fruit and vegetables
- Increase awareness of the importance of eating fruit and vegetables as part of a healthy well balanced diet
The session involved all students having the chance to try some familiar and not so familiar fruit and vegies, and it was terrific to see them having a go at something new or different.
We thank the Marketfresh team for visiting, Mrs.Colaciello for coordinating the visit and we encourage you at home to ask the children about their learning from the presentation.
On Friday 6th March all classes participated in the School:Clean Up Australia Event. Thanks to Mrs.Dosen and her senior students for coordinating this event to not only tidy up our school but to also boost the awareness of our school community of their responsibility to keep Lumen Christi beautiful!
Report by Kohen (Year 6): Last week, the whole school ventured out in the drizzling rain with their special yellow gloves for a good cause. We picked up rubbish in our school yard. Our school collected 346 pieces of rubbish and 212 pieces of recycling! Give yourselves a pat on the back Lumen Christi kids. Thank you everyone for helping our earth and school.
